Sanitarium, the makers of Marmite, announced a looming shortage of the black yeast spread owing to the fact that their Christchurch plant was forced to close due to earthquake damage.
The announcement revealed that the last stocks of Marmite have been sent to distributors, and once those have been sent to supermarkets and sold, that's it.
Until July at least when Sanitarium hopes to have the plant up and running again. The news has spurred some panic buying, which in turn spurred supermarkets and Sanitarium to urge kiwis to think about other kiwis before stockpiling the spread.
